MLS Biggest Wins: The Largest Blowouts and Margins of Victory in League History

Every record-setting blowout in MLS history. Largest margins of victory, biggest comebacks, and the most lopsided matches ever played in Major League Soccer.

Major League Soccer has produced plenty of tight, tactical, one-goal affairs over its three decades of existence. But it has also produced some absolute demolitions --- matches where one team was so thoroughly outclassed that the scoreline crossed from comfortable win into historic territory.

These are not the most aesthetically pleasing matches in MLS history. They are not the most tactically interesting. But they are, in their own way, remarkable. A seven- or eight-goal margin of victory in a professional soccer league does not happen by accident. It requires a perfect storm of one team being in extraordinary form and the other experiencing a complete defensive collapse.

This is the complete record of the biggest wins in MLS history: the largest margins of victory, the most goals scored in a single match, and the context behind each demolition.

United 1 | Timbers vs D.C. United | Sep 18, 2021 | 6 | | 15 | Inter Miami 7, New England 1 | Inter Miami vs Revolution | May 17, 2025 | 6 |

Two matches share the record for the largest margin of victory in MLS history: the LA Galaxy's 8-0 demolition of Real Salt Lake in 2014, and the New England Revolution's 8-0 thrashing of the Columbus Crew in 2023. Both represent the absolute maximum gap the league has produced in a regular season match.

Anatomy of the Record: LA Galaxy 8, Real Salt Lake 0 (2014)

The Galaxy's 8-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on June 4, 2014, remains the joint record for the largest winning margin in MLS history. The match was played at StubHub Center (now Dignity Health Sports Park) in Carson, California, in front of approximately 20,000 fans who witnessed something unprecedented.

How It Happened

The Galaxy were in peak form during their 2014 MLS Cup-winning season. Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan --- two of the most decorated players in MLS history --- were in the twilight of their careers but still capable of dismantling any defense in the league. Real Salt Lake, traveling to California on a midweek fixture, were depleted by injuries and international call-ups.

The Galaxy scored three goals in the first half and five in the second. The scoring was distributed across the squad: Robbie Keane scored twice, Landon Donovan scored twice, Gyasi Zardes contributed, and substitute Alan Gordon added insult to injury with a late goal.

Why It Matters

The 8-0 scoreline is significant not just for the margin but for the team that produced it. The 2014 LA Galaxy were the last great Galaxy team of the Donovan-Keane era --- they went on to win MLS Cup that December, with Donovan retiring after the final. The 8-0 win over RSL was the most emphatic single-game statement of that team's quality.

New England Revolution 8, Columbus Crew 0 (2023)

The other 8-0 in MLS history came nearly a decade later, when the New England Revolution demolished the Columbus Crew on May 27, 2023. This match was remarkable not just for the scoreline but for the context: the Crew were reigning Leagues Cup champions and a genuine title contender.

The Revolution scored five goals in the first half --- three of them in a nine-minute span --- and the match was effectively over before halftime. The second half produced three more goals as Columbus's defense, thoroughly demoralized, offered little resistance.

Gustavo Bou scored a hat trick, and the Revolution's attacking display was as close to perfect as an MLS team has produced. Every shot seemed to find the net; every defensive error was punished immediately.

The 7-0 Club

Seven-nil victories are rare enough in MLS that each one merits attention. Three 7-0 results stand out:

Seattle Sounders 7, Portland Timbers 0 (July 19, 2023)

This is the most stunning entry on the 7-0 list because it happened in a Cascadia Derby --- a rivalry match where the losing side is expected to fight for every ball. Instead, the Portland Timbers capitulated completely at Lumen Field.

The Sounders scored four goals in the first 35 minutes, and the match was essentially over before halftime. Jordan Morris scored twice, and the Seattle attack moved the ball with a fluidity that Portland simply could not contain.

For Portland, the 7-0 loss was a nadir --- the worst defeat in franchise history and the worst result in the Cascadia Cup rivalry. For Seattle, it was validation of a mid-season resurgence and a statement that the club's dynasty-era standards were still achievable.

Atlanta United 7, New England Revolution 0 (September 13, 2017)

Atlanta United's 7-0 demolition of the New England Revolution came during the club's remarkable debut season. Played at Bobby Dodd Stadium (Atlanta's temporary home before Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened), the match showcased Josef Martinez at his lethal best --- he scored four goals, including a hat trick in the first half.

The 2017 Atlanta United were the most exciting expansion team in MLS history, and the 7-0 win over New England was the single most dominant performance of their inaugural campaign. Martinez's four goals in one match tied the MLS single-game record and previewed the 31-goal season he would produce a year later.

San Jose Earthquakes 7, Chicago Fire 0 (April 6, 2001)

The Earthquakes' 7-0 demolition of the Chicago Fire in 2001 was one of the earliest blowouts in MLS history. The match came during San Jose's MLS Cup-winning season and featured a dominant attacking display led by Landon Donovan and Ronald Cerritos.

Highest-Scoring Matches (Combined Goals)

The biggest wins by margin tell one story. The highest-scoring matches --- regardless of which team won --- tell another. These are the matches where defensive structure broke down on both sides:

| Rank | Score | Teams | Date | Total Goals | |------|-------|-------|------|-------------| | 1 | Dallas 6, San Jose 5 | FC Dallas vs Earthquakes | Jul 16, 2008 | 11 | | 2 | LA Galaxy 5, LAFC 3 | Galaxy vs LAFC | Aug 25, 2019 | 8 | | 3 | NYCFC 7, Columbus 1 | NYCFC vs Crew | Aug 2, 2023 | 8 | | 4 | Portland 7, D.C. United 1 | Timbers vs D.C. United | Sep 18, 2021 | 8 | | 5 | LAFC 5, LA Galaxy 3 | LAFC vs Galaxy | Jul 19, 2019 | 8 | | 6 | Atlanta United 7, NE Revolution 0 | United vs Revolution | Sep 13, 2017 | 7 | | 7 | Minnesota 7, Portland 1 | Minnesota vs Timbers | Aug 14, 2022 | 8 | | 8 | LA Galaxy 8, Real Salt Lake 0 | Galaxy vs RSL | Jun 4, 2014 | 8 |

The 6-5 match between FC Dallas and San Jose on July 16, 2008, holds the record for the most combined goals in a single MLS match at 11. That match was complete chaos --- Dallas led 4-2, San Jose pulled back to 4-4, Dallas scored twice more to make it 6-4, and San Jose added a late consolation.

The El Trafico derbies between LAFC and the LA Galaxy appear multiple times on the high-scoring match list, reflecting the wide-open, attacking nature of that rivalry. El Trafico matches average over four goals per game, the highest of any rivalry in MLS.

Biggest Wins in MLS Cup Playoffs

The playoffs typically produce tighter, more conservative matches, but some blowouts have occurred in the postseason:

| Score | Round | Date | Notes | |-------|-------|------|-------| | New England 5, D.C. United 0 | Conference Semis | Nov 2, 2014 | Revolution's most dominant playoff performance | | LA Galaxy 5, Colorado 0 | Conference Semis | Nov 4, 2001 | Galaxy en route to 2001 conference final | | Seattle 4, FC Dallas 0 | Conference Semis | Nov 1, 2014 | Seattle dominance at home | | Columbus 4, D.C. United 0 | Conference Final | Nov 22, 2008 | Crew en route to MLS Cup title | | Atlanta 3, NYCFC 0 | Conference Semis | Nov 11, 2018 | 70,000+ at Mercedes-Benz Stadium |

Playoff blowouts are rarer than regular-season ones because the stakes are higher and teams tend to play more cautiously. A three- or four-goal margin in a playoff match is considered a dominant performance; the five-goal margins that occasionally occur in the regular season are almost unheard of in the postseason.

Biggest Wins by Expansion Teams

Expansion teams occasionally produce lopsided results, though they are more often on the receiving end:

Biggest Wins BY Expansion Teams (In Their First Season)

| Score | Team | Opponent | Date | |-------|------|----------|------| | Atlanta United 7, NE Revolution 0 | Atlanta (2017) | New England | Sep 13, 2017 | | St. Louis CITY SC 5, Charlotte FC 0 | St. Louis (2023) | Charlotte | Mar 11, 2023 | | Charlotte FC 4, New England 1 | Charlotte (2022) | New England | Jun 4, 2022 |

Atlanta's 7-0 demolition of New England in their debut season is by far the most emphatic statement any expansion team has ever made.

Biggest Losses BY Expansion Teams (In Their First Season)

| Score | Team | Opponent | Date | |-------|------|----------|------| | Various 4-0, 5-0 losses | Multiple expansion teams | Various | Various |

Expansion teams typically suffer their worst losses on the road, where the combination of travel fatigue, roster unfamiliarity, and hostile environments can produce blowouts.

Common Factors in MLS Blowouts

Analyzing the biggest wins in MLS history reveals several recurring patterns:

1. Midweek Fixtures and Fatigue

A disproportionate number of blowout results occur on Wednesday nights, when teams are playing their second or third match of the week. The losing side in these matches is often visibly fatigued, which leads to defensive lapses that compound as the match progresses.

2. Early Goals Create Cascading Effects

In almost every 6-0 or larger result, the winning team scored in the first 15 minutes. Early goals force the losing team to open up tactically, which creates more space for additional goals. A team that falls behind 2-0 in the first 20 minutes of an MLS match rarely has the tactical discipline to absorb pressure and wait for opportunities --- they push forward, leave gaps, and concede more.

3. Altitude and Travel

Colorado's home ground in Commerce City (altitude: 5,200 feet) and Real Salt Lake's home in Sandy, Utah (altitude: 4,300 feet) have both been the site of blowout results, both for and against the home teams. Altitude affects visiting teams' stamina, particularly in the second half, and can contribute to the kind of late-match collapses that produce high-margin results.

4. Goalkeeper Errors

In several of the biggest losses on this list, the losing team's goalkeeper made a critical error in the first half that contributed to the scoreline spiraling. Professional goalkeepers rarely have truly bad games, but when they do, the results can be catastrophic.

5. Red Cards

While not present in every blowout, red cards that reduce a team to 10 men in the first half are strongly correlated with lopsided results. Playing 60+ minutes with a man disadvantage in MLS, where the attacking talent is high, is a recipe for a blowout.

Records Within Records

Most Goals by a Single Player in One Match

| Player | Goals | Match | Date | |--------|-------|-------|------| | Josef Martinez | 4 | Atlanta 7, New England 0 | Sep 13, 2017 | | Stern John | 4 | Columbus 7, Dallas 0 | Oct 14, 2001 | | Clint Dempsey | 4 | Seattle 4, Portland 1 | Jul 13, 2013 | | Bradley Wright-Phillips | 4 | NY Red Bulls 5, Houston 3 | Jun 28, 2015 | | Carlos Vela | 4 | LAFC 6, Colorado 0 | Aug 3, 2019 |

The single-game goal record of four has been achieved multiple times but never exceeded. Five goals in a single MLS match remains uncharted territory.

Fastest to Score Multiple Goals

Several blowouts have featured explosive starts where the winning team scored multiple goals in rapid succession:

  • Three goals in five minutes: Multiple instances, most notably in the Galaxy's 8-0 win over RSL
  • Four goals in 20 minutes: Atlanta's 7-0 win over New England saw four goals in the first 35 minutes
  • Five goals in a half: Both the Galaxy 8-0 and Revolution 8-0 featured five-goal halves

Most Goals Conceded in a Single Season by One Team

While individual match blowouts are dramatic, the cumulative record of goals conceded in a season tells a story about systemic defensive failure. The clubs that have conceded the most goals in a single MLS season --- typically 65+ over 34 games --- are often the same clubs that appear on the wrong side of the biggest blowout list.

What Blowouts Tell Us About MLS

The existence of 7-0 and 8-0 results in MLS is sometimes cited by critics as evidence that the league's competitive balance is poor. But the same scores occur in the Premier League (Manchester City has won 7-0 and 8-0 in recent seasons), the Bundesliga (Bayern Munich's dominance produces regular blowouts), and virtually every professional league in the world.

What is true is that MLS's roster construction rules --- the salary cap, the Designated Player mechanism, the allocation order --- are designed to promote parity, and they generally succeed. The league does not have a team that wins the title 10 years in a row. But parity across a season does not prevent individual match blowouts, which are often the result of one team having a historically great night and the other having a historically bad one.

The biggest wins in MLS history are not evidence of a broken league. They are evidence that, on any given day, the gap between peak performance and catastrophic failure in professional soccer is enormous. When everything clicks for one team and everything falls apart for the other, the scoreline can reach places that neither side expected.

And that unpredictability --- the knowledge that any match could produce a 1-0 grind or an 8-0 demolition --- is part of what makes the sport worth watching.
